Betsey Snyder, 1822

Hi everyone,
Time for an update: a beautiful sampler and a bad finishing!

I decided to stitch this small sampler… well my version of the original sampler.

Model from With thy Needle & Thread – Betsey Snyder, 1822.
Stitched on 36 count American Chestnut linen by R&R Reproductions using the recommended threads.

I leaved out the name of the girl who stitched this sampler and date/year (Betsey Snyder Sampler Made 30 Sept 1822).
But I decided to stitch the “M”, “O” and “a” like charted. “M” and “O”, using half stitches and the letter “a” is incompleted and is stitched with full cross and half stitches.

The alphabet is beautiful, some of the letters are stitched with Smyrna stitch.

Look at this dog! So pretty!

And now … well I had a bad finishing…

At first I thought of using drawn thread embroidery, using hemstitch. But I decided to sew bias tape in the same colour palette of the sampler.

On my first attempt two corners were bad… and I decided to rip out and sew again… and now I have a ugly corner and the bias tape is not straight… Lesson learned, when I’m tired I need to stop… I hope to fix this soon… Now for some reason this ugly finishing makes me laugh.

Thanks for stopping by today! Happy stitching,

Hi, I'm Lili! Welcome to my personal stitching blog! I love hearing what you have to say! Please come back again soon!

  1. This is such a lovely little sampler, Lili. And I’m sorry to read that you were having so much trouble with the bias tape in one corner.

  2. Your sampler is lovely,I like Smyrna stitches they are so decorative.I hope you get you finishing as you want it,Lili. We are our own wosrt critics with our stitched pieces but it means we want things the best they can be.

  3. A very cute Sampler.
I love the finishing technique you used.
    I think it looks great!

  4. Your photograph does not show any error, I think it looks great, are you being too hard on yourself? Such a pretty sampler too and I love the linen you chose to stitch it on.

  5. Sorry to hear you are not pleased with your finishing. I hope you get it all worked out. The stitching is beautiful!!

  6. What a pretty sampler with a lovely alphabet, Lili! I have never tried a finish with the bias tape, but it looks a bit tricky. I hope you can re-do it without too many problems 🙂

  7. Lili, I love your sampler. It has such wonderful colors and motifs. I too like the Smyrna stitch…it really looks pretty. You can’t see a mistake in your finishing but I know you will fix it so it makes you happy and proud. RJ
